New Brexit Meta study supports CEEMET findings

CEEMET (14/04/2016). The Cologne Institute for Economic Research, IW Köln, has presented their new report “Brexit —The Economic Impact” in which they conclude that the risks for the UK of leaving the EU are widely underestimated. The potential net economic damage would potentially be about 10 percent or more for the UK.

Terry Scuoler, CEO of EEF, warned in an interview with Politico Europe for the “potential danger of loss of living standards and general well-being for the people of the U.K.”.

According to the IW study, the EU is the UK’s main trading partner. Britain exports about 45 percent of goods and 38 percent of its services to the EU.

That is why CEEMET warned in an earlier study that a Brexit would be a ‘lose-lose’ situation for EU manufacturers. The impact of Brexit could trigger a downward effect on GDP growth in industry of -0.5% annually over 15 years. However, the impact could be even greater as the analysis focuses on the industrial sector and doesn’t take into account the impact in the UK financial and wider services sector.
